The posts of Gaza Verified accounts are achived on the Gaza Verified Archive for posterity as first-hand witness testimony of the Israeli genocide of the Palestinian people.
Our mission
We exist to protect the Mastodon accounts of Palestinians from Gaza on the fediverse from scammers who want to steal from them and from génocidaires who want to erase all Palestinians – both offline and online – from existence.
The fediverse is often the last lifeline for people from Gaza who are victims of Israel’s genocide to reach the outside world and receive mutual aid and our goal is to ensure that it remains a safe space for them to do so.
We hope that the situation in Gaza will improve in time, that the criminals behind this genocide will be brought to justice, and that with reparations this initiative will only need to be a temporary one.
Our team
Our core team is comprised of Joy, a Palestinian writer and poet and herself a survivor of genocide, and Aral, a developer and human rights activist.
Our process
We verify, to the best of our abilities, that people who say they’re Palestinians from Gaza are who they say they are by holding video conversations with them.
Beyond that, we’re in touch with them daily and trying to help them raise funds to stay alive.
For more details, please see our guide.
Why is this necessary?
Israel is committing genocide in Palestine.
As a result, famine was officially declared in Gaza.
The cost of food has skyrocketed and people rely on donations from outside Gaza to keep their families alive.
Even if the ceasefire holds, their homes and livelihoods have been destroyed.
The Internet is the last remaining lifeline for people in Palestine to reach the outside world for help. But the Internet is also hostile territory for these people who have suffered so much already.
Tech platforms in Western countries complicit in Israel’s genocide keep closing Palestinian accounts.
Having been locked out of other platforms, Palestinians are turning to Mastodon and the fediverse to try and raise money so their families can buy food to eat and, if they’re being forcefully displaced, to rent land, a tent, and basic sanitation.
Unfortunately, some other people – unscrupulous and devoid of all humanity as they are – create fake accounts to take advantage of the situation and literally steal from starving genocide victims.
Most times, these accounts are bots and it’s easy for fediverse admins to identify and block them.
However, the existence of these accounts does create an atmosphere of distrust and an opportunity for other people – also unscrupulous and devoid of all humanity – to try to get all Palestinian accounts banned as scams. Thankfully, their efforts – for the time being, at least – are failing.
And yet we must stay vigilant and ensure that the fediverse remains a safe haven for people trying to survive genocide.
What this site aims to do, in its own small way, is to establish a web of trust using Mastodon’s verification feature to ensure ongoing access to the fediverse for the very real human beings who are suffering through one of the worst tragedies of our lifetimes.
It’s important to note that this site is not exhaustive. Just because the Mastodon account of a Palestinian person trying to raise funds on the fediverse is not listed here, it doesn’t mean that the account is not genuine.
